What It Takes to Work From Home

One of the biggest advantages of an online set up is that in majority cases, you don't need to have an office. You can work from home or for that matter, you can work from absolutely anywhere in this world! All you need is your laptop and access to internet, and you are through!

In this article, I am not going to start telling you the numerous benefits of working from home. I am sure everyone is aware of those benefits, right from flexibility-both time and physical location, to the advantage of being able to do the activities which otherwise you would not be able to do in office premises.
The point is, everyone is aware of these benefits. So no point in going through them all over again. This article will focus on those things that many people are not aware of about "work from home" setup.
This article is for people who are planning to start their ventures from home. Here are few points which one should take care of if planning to work from home. These points are from my own experience and the ones that I myself incorporate.
1. Stop giving explanations
One common problem every person who works from home faces is- of being taken granted. Yes! Just go and tell someone that you work from home, and one reaction that you will get immediately from the other person is a wide smile! And something of sort "Wow! You work from home? You are a lucky guy! You don't have tensions of reaching office on time or being answerable to anyone! And you must be having world of time to chill." I will not say that all these things are wrong. Some of them are true, but the way they are perceived by people is wrong. I too have been taken for granted many times. People had tone like "you work from home so chill, big deal; you can definitely make time for so and so activity". I used to get very upset and would try hard convincing them that though I work from home, I need to work equally hard as I would have worked in any office. But all my efforts would be to no avail. And it frustrated me even more. One fine day, I realized, why am I giving explanations? And to whom? Is it really worth the effort? And then I stopped explaining my guts out. Whenever I receive (believe me I still do) any such negative response, I simply smile back to that person and save myself whole lot of energy and time!
2. Prioritize
This, according to me, is the most important thing which one must do when planning to work from home. One should actually plan one's day. Because, many times, let alone others, but we also tend to take ourselves for granted and then work definitely takes a backseat. Let me admit, when I quit my job and turned full time entrepreneur, I too had a laid-back attitude towards work. Unknowingly, other things got priority and slowly, work started pending. Soon I realized that I had a list of pending tasks and was falling short of time to complete them. This is when I sat and did introspection. I realized my mistake-I was not balancing my activities, work was not being given sufficient time. I was not doing it deliberately, but still had incorporated that laid back attitude.
But thankfully, realization struck in time. Now I have my day scheduled just the way I had when I was working with other company. I complete my household chores before 10 a.m., work from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and then use rest of the time for other activities. I see to it this schedule is not interrupted. There are times when I can't stick to it, but then I compensate it by working late at night. (That's another biggest advantage of work from home set-up).
The idea is, you should prioritize your work. You should be self-motivated and most important; you should be committed to your work.
3. Commitment
According to me, the most important and difficult task of working from home is being committed to your work. You have to be highly self-motivated and determined. Then and only then can you survive and make this set up a success. Set goals for yourself, challenge yourself, make your own commitments and make sure you stick to it. Ensure you achieve those goals at any cost. Believe me, it's far more difficult when you are working from home as you are not answerable to anyone but your own self. So you should have very strong self-motivation. And if you have that, nothing can stop you from being successful.
4. Discipline
Finally, be disciplined. Work as you would go out and work for any other company. Be properly dressed when you sit for work every day. Keep the place where you work very clean and clutter free. These things may seem very meager and not-so-important. But believe me, these small things matter a lot and give lot of confidence.
Always remember, self-discipline is the best discipline.
If you are planning to start work from home or are already working from home and finding it difficult to manage both-work and household activities, keep the above mentioned things in mind. These things are the ones that I follow and so can assure you, if you too stick by them, they will do wonders to you too!
